Ishawna Tablecloth Controversy

Written by on July 20, 2017

Dancehall Artist Ishawna may have very well committed career suicide when she referred to one of Jamaica’s iconic figure, the late Rt. Hon. Dr. Louise Bennett Coverly most commonly called “Miss Lou” cultural attire as “table cloth.” The comment was posted on the artist social media page following Fae Ellington telling her to “put some clothes on.” Clearly. the artist’s comment was met with mix responses from fans and other Jamaicans who hold Miss Lou in high regards. It is safe to say her comment did not sit well with many Jamaicans at home and abroad who made their opinions known on social media. ONLINE READERS COMMENT: Ishawna and Miss Lou’s ‘tablecloth’ frock

Most Recently, a letter in Ishawna’s defense was sent to the editor of the Jamaican Observer newspaper on the matter titled Ishawna is well in touch with her culture My response: Excellent point and well taken. However, Ishawna’s comment about “tablecloth” and the writer’s very important point does not change the fact that the cloth Miss Lou wore is of great cultural significance to Jamaica and it’s people which should not be regarded with flippancy.

I share the following three articles to give some light on the festive costume/cloth and its origin: (http://www.my-island-jamaica.com/jamaican-bandana-the-histo…) The man and woman on the “Arms of Jamaica” referred to as the “coat of arms” are Indians. Dressing in that fashion was a way of life for them (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-Jamaicans). As with most things Black, let us not make what others so much treasure become a source of shame (http://histclo.com/mat/mat-madras.html).

Notwithstanding, I do support that the “Arms of Jamaica” is reflective of how many females dress in our culture and when we disparage them for dressing skimpy with the Arms of Jamaica proudly displaying two half naked figures, I does send a mixed message.
