Michael Palmer, a Dancehall/Reggae high stepper of the 70’s and 80’s stopped by Global Linkz Radio to share his thoughts and explain his 20 year hiatus from the musical arena. Born in 1960 In Maxfield Park, Jamaica. Michael Palmer rose to fame in the Dancehall area during the same period as Barrington Levy, Junior. Reid, Frankie Paul, Half Pint, Little John, and the late Wayne Smith.
During his reasoning with host Empress Skortcher, Palmer Dog as he was sometimes called, expressed that the main reason he stepped in the background for 20 years was on account of doctor’s orders, that advised him to stop singing or risk totally losing his voice. He also described his big reemergence as he was invited by the young promoter Emmanuel Gonzalez to do at a show in San Diego, California.
The artist was asked to explain how he came to write one of his biggest hit “Lick Shot,” at which time he shared that he penned the song in four or fewer minutes within hours after an incident in which he was approached by men in his Maxfield Park community during the heights of the 80’s political friction while he was still living in Jamaica.
Palmer stated he asked Henry “Junjo” Lawes to record the track but was turned down. Hence, “Lick Shot” was later recorded by the Late Engineer,Ruddy Thomas at Dynamic Sounds Recording Studio for Producer George Phang.
Michael Palmer would go on to record his follow up doubled titled hit song “Ready Mi Ready/No More Lean boot.” Both songs were successful in their own right, with “Lick Shot,” Michael revealed, was the song to capture the number one position on the charts in Jamaica displacing Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello.”

At times Michael Palmer became emotional as he voiced his displeasure with some of his earlier record producers and distributors, alluding that he was not paid for many of his musical works. Michael Palmer recently performed at the 2015 Bob Marley’s Reggae Fest in California with several major acts including, Sister Carol, Tristan Palmer, Little John, Mighty Diamonds,Luciano and one of Reggae’s Renaissance/Revival artist, Chronixx, among others. He is currently working on his self produce album which he explained is a work in progress.
Michael’s story of piracy, and exploitation of Intellectual Property Rights and failure to sign contractual agreements prior to recording songs is the told and untold story of many other early artists as well as some emerging acts.
